Fascinating to hear Anselm Kiefer speak at the cultural centre JW3 about his work in his only public interview to coincide with his Royal Academy show. When I visited him at his studio complex in Bajac in southern France in 1995 it was a very different experience. Then Kiefer was intense, intellectual, erudite, his points of reference travelling from Paul Celan, via Robert Fludd to William Shakespeare. This evening he was altogether lighter in mood, more playful and even humorous. Maybe less detail and depth, but certainly always interesting.
